WHILE his team-mates are counting down the days before the start of pre-season training, West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green has a bigger thing on his mind.
So big in fact, that it is the tallest mountain in Africa - the 19,340 ft Mount Kilimanjaro - which the 28-year-old is climbing to raise funds for the charity AMREF (African Medical and Research Foundation).
Green will head to Kenya today, where he will will host football tournaments in Nairobi and Kibera, Africa's biggest slum, to encourage youngsters to study and re-build trust with other ethnic groups following the recent post-election violence.
advertisement Green will then head to north west Tanzania where, before starting his seven-day trek up and down Kilimanjaro, he will teach young people about the dangers of HIV/Aids.
"Africa's number one love is football and it seems a waste not to use it to try and spread the message," said Green, who has raised nearly £8,000.
"If we can affect a few lives then brilliant. It is pretty basic medical care that people are getting.

"AMREF is a massive charity and they are doing fantastic work.
"I am going to see first-hand the work they do.
"The climax is the attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is going to be a tough challenge and one that I'm looking forward to."
