West Ham will make another bid to sign Reading defender Nicky Shorey but boss Alan Curbishley has been told he must sell before he buys. (Daily Express)

Makes sense and would be a great buy! :D

Shorey should play in the Premiership and West Ham want him. I don't think there will be much trouble in this transfer.

Following Reading's somewhat harsh relegation to the Championship earlier this month, it looks as though star player Nicky Shorey could be on his way out of the Madejski Stadium in an effort to raise funds for the Berkshire club.

West Ham have long been admirers of the England international, rumoured to have made a number of bids last summer and in the January transfer window with Reading reluctant to let their star left back leave.

Now, as seen with West Ham when the Hammers were relegated in 2003, a number of Reading's best players could be leaving to reduce the financial impact of dropping down a league.

Any fee is thought to be in the region of £5m, and other admirers have also made themselves known, Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill declaring his interest, whilst Newcastle are said to be keeping watch.

Any move from Alan Curbishley, however, is likely to be after we get rid of some players of our own. How does Nigel Quashie and £50 grand sound, Mr Coppell?

The Hammers have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old since last summer but Steve Coppell constantly rebuffed any approach.

But due to the financial consequences of relegation and Shorey's desire to retain his place in Fabio Capello's England squad, a move back to the Premier League appears certain.

Reading director of football Nicky Hammond however insists that West Ham have yet to make their move.

Hammond said: "I have not had bids for any of our players yet.

"I have not spoken with Nicky Shorey since the end of the season, but I will speak to his representatives."
