With Dean Ashton set to hold a crucial meeting with West Ham officials this week regarding a new contract, Hammers keeper Rob Green has warned the club they must ensure the striker stays at the Boleyn Ground.

Green spoke out about the future of his team-mate - who also joined the East London club from Norwich Cioty - in the wake of reports that Manchester United were interest in signing the 24-year-old this summer.

Although Ashton has said he is happy to stay at West Ham, he also claimed he did not know if he was still wanted by the club. The Hammers' chief executive, Scott Duxbury, replied to that by confirming that talks would be held between the club and the player on Friday.

Meanwhile Green has felt it necessary to urge the Hammers' hierarchy not to let Ashton leave, because ha can have a huge impact on the team.

He said: "He's a tremendous player and talent, maybe it's something to do with the size of him. I don't mean that in a bad sense! He just has something other people haven't got.

"England have plenty of quick, skilful forwards, but beyond Peter Crouch we haven't got a target man of that international class.

"Dean's back in the England squad now and rightly so, on the back of some tremendous performances towards the end of the season.

"This season's been difficult for him because everyone was expecting so much, but he came back and showed what he can do. It's massively important he stays at West Ham."

As always Green makes sense but I think if wee do let Ashton go Green may follow as I think he feels we may be losing our ambition.

Both players are crucial to our team if we are to make progress, I'll be extremely pissed off if we let either of them go!
